Start the New Year Right!

The New Year is a great time to check on things that you haven't checked on in a while - smoke alarm batteries, yearly physicals, car tune-ups, and your web site.

Now is a great time to go through your web site and check for problems, make changes, and just make sure it is in good condition and easy to use.

Is the information old, outdated, or out of style? Does your web site still work with the new technologies out there? Here are some specific things to check on:

Reduce the number of site pages. Make sure your content is still concise and still makes sense in its organization.

Create an incentive for visitors to register or give you their e-mail addresses. Give away something that your audience would perceive as valuable for their exchange of personal information, like a prize for consumers or an e-book for business-to-business clients. Once you have addresses, use them! Send out useful newsletters or special offers.

Shorten page load time. In the beginning, fancy graphics and animations were cool. Now, they're mere obstacles in the path of getting to information or products. Three words for you: Streamline. Streamline. Streamline.

Offer more online services. Enable your customers to register, buy, fix, sort, or whatever. They want to do as much as possible for themselves.

Get fashionable. Revise the site's color palette. Colors and styles change. Just look in the back of your closet for what not to do.

Work on your search engine optimization. This is a never-ending, always changing challenge. That's why they call them Search Engine Optimists!

Align the site to your business. You've probably reinvented your business a half-dozen times over the past few years. How appropriate is your site now? What about secondary pages? Make sure your site's messaging is always in tune with your print marketing.

Add testimonials or success stories. Ask longtime customers for quotes or permission to post their case histories and their satisfaction with your services.

Test your site. Check it out with friends and family to see what works and what doesn't. Ask 3 to 5 of your friends or relatives to sit down and try to complete a typical task your customer would want to do on your website. Take notes and see how they do on each of the tasks. Make sure they are of varying computer skill levels, and you will see how your site holds up. I am sure you will find some surprises - some oh -nos (how did I miss that one) and at least one - hey, wow, that worked great!
