I have
two clients that have been working on their web sites for quite
some time now. Not only are the sites not on the web and not selling, but
their business plans are stalled because they don't have a web site.
Why
are they stalled? What are they waiting for? What is scaring
them?
What is missing is perfection!
Their web sites are not perfect - at least, not to them. They
are forever making tiny changes that the customer really won't
notice, and forever searching for that perfect color. When I
finally think - OK, now we can publish! They back down and find
some huge problem with their site or their business which puts
everything in a stall again.
In
business, as in life, sometimes you just have to close your
eyes and hold your breath and take that flying leap!
If
you are that worried about perfection, your web site will
probably never be perfect! But - that's one of the wonderful things about the web - it doesn't have to be!
A web site is not like a brochure. With a brochure, you are always finding errors after the expensive print job has been done. You always look at the finished product, hot off the press and discover you misspelled your name. The problem is that now you are stuck with a whole lot of expensive and incorrect brochures.
A web site is wonderfully alive and changeable. If you make a mistake or find a misspelling, you can change it very easily.
My own web site started out as just three pages and I've completely redesigned it twice and rewritten it at least 4 times. I have added several pages and taken out several pages. I have changed the colors several times, added graphics, changed photos, and changed addresses and phone numbers, too. I am continually changing it because it is such a vital part of my business.
That's another wonderful thing about a web site - as your business changes and grows, so can your web site.
My business is very different now from what it was when I started out - and so is my web site. If you already have a web site, try to look at it through
a stranger's eyes and see if it reflects your business - if it doesn't, if your business has changed, maybe it is time to change your web site, too.
You might find that after launching your new web site, you find that response from your customers indicate you need to make some changes to your new site - that's ok - you can do that - it is easy to fix.
So don't let the search for perfection stall the launch of your new web site.
Remember a web site is easily changed, and even should be changed as your business grows and changes.
