Email Newsletter Frequently Asked Questions

Email newsletters are a great advantage in target marketing. They are fast and easy to create, a great way to keep your name in front of your target market and amazingly inexpensive compared to print newsletters.

Recently, I’ve been getting a lot of questions about email newsletters. So, I thought I’d answer some of the most common ones.

How often do I send out my newsletter?
Start with once a month – some people do less and some do more. Try it out and see what you can handle. One tip – the more often you send out a newsletter, the shorter it should be. I know one marketer who sends a newsletter every week that is never longer than 2 paragraphs. That’s really all you need.

How can I write all the articles?
Again, shorter is better. If you are not a writer and start to shake at the idea of an article every month, a great tip is Article Banks! Article Banks are sites on the web where people publish their articles. These articles are FREE for anyone to use – as long as the author is listed at the end of the article. There are literally hundreds of thousands of articles on every subject under the sun. Also, if you love to write, consider offering your past articles to these article banks. Getting published will always lend you credibility and spread the word about your expertise.

How long does it have to be?
Can I say it one more time? Shorter is better. Most readers won’t read much past the initial two or three paragraphs. So – put your most important information first and WRITE SHORT!

Can I buy or rent email lists?
No. That is against the Anti-Spam law.

How do I get email addresses?
All your addresses must be collected with the permission of the owner. You should have a place to sign up for your newsletter on your web site. These addresses will automatically be entered into your autoresponder database. This is a great way to get a very specifically targeted market. Only the people really interested in your service or product will sign up. Another great way to collect addresses is guest books, forms, any place someone will give you their telephone number, make sure you also collect their email address. Whenever you get someone’s business card, ask them if you can send them an email.

What is an autoresponder?
An autoresponder is a web-based program set up to make your email marketing as easy as possible. When you collect an address, you can enter it into the autoresponder from your internet browser, it will “respond” to someone who signs up for your newsletter, telling them that they have subscribed. It will also automatically “unsubscribe” anyone who has decided they don’t want your newsletter anymore. You can also create your newsletters, they offer templates and easy fill-in-the-blank forms to help you.

Pouncy Designs is an affiliate of Constant Contact, one of the largest, most popular autoresponders available. Please check out their advantages.
