Yes, I know I tend to get on my soapbox about good web design and as you all have heard me say again and again,
no blinky, fluttery, moving things on web sites! They distract the reader from the most important part of the web site - the content!
But of course, we all know that every rule ever written has its exceptions. And this week,
I came across a good one.
I have a client who really wants a "cool Flash" website with maybe a
"cool Flash movie" with impressive effects and graphics.
Now, I tried my best to talk him out of it, mainly because he is also concerned about being in the top ten of the search engine results. And all I have read lately says that Flash and search engines don't mix.
I tried so hard to talk him out of it, that I almost talked myself out of a sale, until he told me who his audience was.
He just happened to mention that his clients are "Microsoft Millionaires". And then it hit me -
he NEEDS a Flash movie on his site! His website audience is computer savvy,
well-educated, and inundated with the "latest thing" in computers.
They expect to see great graphics, and the coolest thing in web sites for the products and services they use.
And they are unimpressed and not interested if they don't. That is why he needs a redesign of his site right now - its coolness quotient is extremely low.
So, right there I decided to break my own rule!
Yes, we would do cool graphics and a flash movie - as long as I could figure out how to reconcile that with top search engine results. After a little research, I found that I can embed a flash "movie" inside a regular web page with content and all the keywords, etc. needed for good search engine results.
I also found that the
30 second Flash intro movies are going out of style - for good reasons. People don't much like to sit through a flash movie every time they go to a website -
takes too much time, boring after the first time, and irritating if all you want is their phone number.
So, I admit I am breaking one of my favorite web design rules.
But - ya gotta have a really good reason!
