So the guy you were using to design and make changes to your website moved, died, or went off to college. Now what? How do you make your changes? Where IS your web site anyway? What the heck is a web host? Will you have to put out a lot of bucks to find out?
Here are some tips and tricks to avoid some of these issues, and how to deal with what you can’t avoid.
- Find out from your present web designer the name of your web host, the ftp address, and the login and passwords. You paid for it – it’s yours! You need to keep records of this important information. If you have this information you can go to any web designer and they will be able to access your web site and make any changes for you.
- If you don’t know the name of your web host and the login and password,
and your designer leaves you in the lurch, you can at least find out who the web host is by going to www.freewho.com entering your domain name (that’s the www.yourcompany.com) and you will get a list of information about your web site, including the web host.
- Sometimes this information is locked
– which means it is not available to the public. This means you will need to change web hosts. The only way to do that is to change nameservers with the registrar of your domain name. But again, you will need login and password for the registrar account.
- If you don’t have the login and password for the registrar of your domain name, you can contact the registrar (remember it is listed in www.freewho.com). You will have to prove you are the owner of the business and they will tell you what they need to do that.
- This is complicated and will take time
and probably some money to start a new web host account. Avoid these problems by keeping good records!
Here is what you need to know:
Web Host web address, login and password for your account.
Domain Name Registrar web address, login and password for your account.
Any reputable web designer can help you through this maze if you are really stuck and confused. Try and find one who plans to stick around!
