This past month, I’ve had several clients ask me about
Internet Marketing or SEO (Search Engine Optimization). How can they get their website listed in the “top ten” of various search engines? My answer is that I’m not so sure they should!
If your web site is an e-commerce site that sells products and you don’t care where the customers come from, then yes, you need to spend the money to market your site on the search engines.
But if your site is a marketing tool for your local business, don’t spend the money. Remember, search engines are marketing to a “global” audience, and if your marketing niche is local and not global, spend your marketing dollar on local marketing. Here are some ways to market your web site locally:
- Put your website address on EVERYTHING! Business cards, brochures, letterhead, sweatshirts, caps, pens, etc. etc. The more times they see it, the more likely they are to remember it.
- Network in your community. Use networking groups, events, and any positive reason to shake hands, introduce yourself and give out your business card.
- Become an expert in your field.
Public speaking, writing articles, writing books, etc. will make people refer to you and your website for further information.
- Offer great service outside of sales. Go the extra mile for your clients and contacts. You will be remembered.
- Volunteer in your community. Not only is it the “right thing to do” but it is a great way to get your name out there. Donate to auctions, volunteer for fundraising drives (don’t just give money, show your face).
After you’ve conquered these and other marketing venues, and your business is doing well and you have the need to market to a larger audience, contact an Internet Marketing agency and work with them to get to the “top ten” in Google. Just make sure it is in your marketing plan – be prepared to spend some money.
