I get a lot of calls from prospective clients who hang up and decide to “do it themselves”. This happens right after I mention how much it will cost – hmmm, I wonder why?
Of course, they think they are going to save a bundle – I mean, how hard can it be?
Well, I guess I can answer that by saying,
“It’s not hard at all, if you want to end up with a web site that is a piece of crap!”
(I can say that – it’s my newsletter!)
What I try and tell my clients is that a well-designed web site is much more than pretty colors, good photos and a long product list.
Customers won’t buy from your site if they can’t find the “buy” button.
But they also won’t buy if you are not giving a clear message, or if your “message” is amateurish, clumsy, and unprofessional.
Think of it this way, when you walk into a grocery store, and the lighting is poor, the place is a mess, and the whole building smells like rotten produce, how likely is it that you are going to buy anything?
And when you walk into any of the big grocery stores like Safeway or Albertsons and see great lighting, clean aisles and everything smells like freshly baked bread (come on, they don’t make that fresh bread every hour because they sell so much of it – it’s because it smells so good, they sell more of everything!) how much more do you buy than what you went in for – a gallon of milk.
Safeway or Albertsons puts a
LOT of thought, testing, and professional marketing into making their store a place where you will spend your money. And their web sites are exactly the same.
So, no, it isn’t that hard to build a web site and get it published. But do you have the years of experience, training and talent to make it a great web site where your customers will come and buy?
Or will it be a piece of crap?
